SEN Tutor

Salary: £25 - £35 per hour

Job Description

The SEN Tutor provides tailored educational support to children and young people with special educational needs. The role involves delivering one-to-one or small group sessions that address individual learning requirements and help students achieve their full potential. The SEN Tutor works closely with educational settings and families to implement personalised learning plans, monitor progress, and adapt teaching methods to suit diverse needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver specialised teaching sessions that meet the individual needs of learners with special educational needs and disabilities.
  • Assess and monitor each learner’s progress, adapting teaching strategies accordingly to promote effective learning.
  • Develop and implement personalised learning plans in collaboration with schools, parents, and other professionals.
  • Use a variety of teaching resources and techniques to engage learners and support their educational development.
  • Maintain accurate records of sessions, progress, and any concerns to ensure continuity of support.
  • Communicate effectively with parents, carers, and educational professionals to provide updates and collaborate on learner support.
  • Promote positive behaviour and support social and emotional development as part of the learning process.
  • Stay informed of current best practises and legislation relating to special educational needs and disabilities.

Required Qualifications

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification, or a recognised qualification in special educational needs.
  • Recognised training or certification in special educational needs and disabilities.

Education

  • Degree in Education, Special Educational Needs, or a related field is preferred.

Experience

  • Proven experience working as a tutor, teaching assistant, or educator supporting learners with special educational needs.
  • Experience delivering one-to-one or small group tuition.
  • Familiarity with a range of special educational needs conditions and appropriate teaching strategies.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of the SEN Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
  • Ability to assess learning needs and develop appropriate educational interventions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective collaboration with learners, families, and professionals.
  • Patience, empathy, and the ability to motivate and inspire learners.
  • Organisational skills to manage planning, record-keeping, and reporting.
  • Flexibility to adapt teaching approaches to varying learner requirements.
  • Basic knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional qualifications in speech and language therapy, behavioural support, or educational psychology are advantageous.
  • Experience working within a school or educational setting supporting special educational needs.
  • First aid qualification or willingness to obtain.

Working Conditions

  • Part-time hours, typically during term time, with flexibility around school hours.
  • Work takes place primarily within educational settings, including schools and community locations.
  • Occasional travel within Greater London may be required.
  • Role involves direct interaction with children and young people, requiring adherence to safeguarding policies.
  • May require working with learners who have complex needs in a calm and supportive manner.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
