Special Educational Needs Tutor

Job Description

This role involves providing specialised tuition and support to learners with a variety of special educational needs. The tutor works closely with pupils to develop personalised learning plans that address their individual learning challenges and promote academic and social development. The position requires adapting teaching methods to suit diverse needs and collaborating with educational professionals to ensure the best outcomes for each learner.

Job Duties

• Plan and deliver tailored educational sessions to learners with special educational needs in accordance with individual learning requirements.
• Assess learners’ progress regularly and adjust teaching approaches to meet evolving needs.
• Create a supportive, inclusive, and safe learning environment that encourages engagement and confidence.
• Develop and implement personalised learning programmes, including bespoke resources and materials.
• Monitor and record learner achievements and challenges, providing feedback to relevant stakeholders as necessary.
• Collaborate with parents, carers, and other education professionals to coordinate support and share best practises.
• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of current educational strategies, legislation, and best practises relating to special educational needs.
• Promote learners’ independence and self-esteem through patient, empathetic, and motivational teaching techniques.
• Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and procedures at all times.

Required Qualifications

• Relevant teaching qualification or diploma in special educational needs, education, or a related field.
• Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or willingness to undergo one prior to employment.

Education

• A degree or equivalent qualification in education, special educational needs, psychology, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Additional accredited training in special educational needs or relevant teaching methodologies is advantageous.

Experience

• Proven experience working directly with learners who have special educational needs, preferably within a school or educational setting.
• Experience in devising and delivering tailored teaching programmes that accommodate individual learning styles and needs.
• Familiarity with a range of special educational needs, including but not limited to autism spectrum disorder, dyslexia, speech and language difficulties, and behavioural challenges.

Knowledge and Skills

• Strong understanding of the principles and practises of special educational needs provision.
• Ability to adapt teaching techniques to suit diverse learning requirements.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling effective engagement with learners, families, and education professionals.
• Patience, empathy, and resilience in working with learners experiencing a range of challenges.
• Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage time effectively and maintain detailed records.
• Competence in using educational technology and resources to support learning.
• Awareness of relevant legislation, safeguarding requirements, and health and safety standards.

Preferred Qualifications

• Qualification in teaching or supporting learners with specific needs such as dyslexia, speech and language therapy, or behavioural management.
• Experience working within multidisciplinary teams, including educational psychologists, therapists, and social workers.
• Certification in first aid or mental health first aid.

Working Conditions

• The role is temporary and part-time, with flexible working hours to accommodate learners’ schedules.
• Work takes place primarily within educational settings such as schools, learning centres, or community facilities across Greater London.
• The post requires regular interaction with learners who may present challenging behaviours or require additional support.
• The role involves some preparation and administrative duties outside of direct teaching hours.
• Occasional travel across the Greater London area may be necessary to meet learners at different locations.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
