Special Educational Needs Tutor
Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor provides targeted support and specialised teaching to pupils with additional learning needs. The role involves planning and delivering tailored learning programmes, adapting teaching methods to meet individual requirements, and monitoring progress to ensure educational development. The tutor works closely with educational staff and families to promote inclusive learning environments and support pupils in achieving their full potential.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, prepare and deliver individual or small group tuition sessions for pupils with special educational needs.
- Assess pupils’ abilities and learning needs to design appropriate teaching strategies and materials.
- Adapt resources and approaches to accommodate a range of learning difficulties, including but not limited to autism spectrum disorders, dyslexia, and speech or language impairments.
- Monitor and record pupils’ progress, providing regular feedback to parents or guardians, and liaising with teaching staff and specialist professionals as required.
- Support the development of pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural skills alongside academic progress.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of legislation, best practise, and educational frameworks relevant to special educational needs and disabilities.
- Contribute to the creation and review of individual education plans (IEPs) and behaviour support plans.
- Promote an inclusive and supportive learning environment that encourages independence and confidence.
- Attend relevant meetings, training sessions and professional development activities as necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification or specialist diploma in special educational needs.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance or equivalent.
Education
- Minimum of GCSEs in English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above, or equivalent.
- Further education qualification in special educational needs, education, or related discipline preferred.
Experience
- Proven experience working as a tutor, teaching assistant, or specialist educator with pupils who have special educational needs.
- Experience in assessing and planning for diverse learning needs.
- Familiarity with a range of special educational needs and associated teaching strategies.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of the SEND Code of Practise and relevant legislation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with pupils, parents and professionals.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods and materials to meet individual learning styles and needs.
- Patience, empathy and a positive approach to supporting learners facing challenges.
- Competent in basic IT skills to prepare teaching resources and maintain records.
- Organisational skills to manage workload and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Level 3 Diploma or above in Supporting Teaching and Learning or equivalent specialist SEND qualification.
- Experience working within a school or educational setting in Greater London.
- Training in behaviour management or related specialism.
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours, flexible according to the needs of the pupils and the educational setting.
- Work primarily takes place in educational environments such as schools or learning centres.
- Occasional travel within Greater London may be required.
- The role involves working closely with children and young people, necessitating a commitment to safeguarding and child protection policies.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
