Salary: £25 - £35 per hour

Job Description

As a Special Educational Needs Tutor, you provide tailored educational support to children and young people with a range of additional learning needs. Your role focuses on delivering individualised tuition that addresses specific learning difficulties, promotes educational development, and fosters confidence and independence. You work closely with educational settings, parents, and carers to ensure that the learner’s needs are met in a supportive and effective manner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver bespoke learning sessions that meet the individual needs of learners with special educational needs.
  • Assess learners’ current abilities and identify areas requiring development through ongoing observation and formal assessment tools.
  • Develop and implement personalised learning plans that align with curriculum requirements and learner targets.
  • Use a range of teaching strategies and resources to engage learners and address diverse learning styles and challenges.
  • Monitor and record learner progress, providing constructive feedback to learners, parents, and relevant professionals.
  • Adapt teaching methods and materials to accommodate learners with communication difficulties, sensory impairments, or physical disabilities.
  • Support learners in developing key skills such as literacy, numeracy, social interaction, and self-regulation.
  • Maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment at all times.
  • Collaborate professionally with schools, therapists, and other external agencies to ensure a consistent and holistic approach to support.
  • Stay informed of current legislation, best practises, and developments in special educational needs provision and pedagogy.

Required Qualifications

  • A relevant teaching qualification or equivalent professional qualification in education or special educational needs.
  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance or willingness to obtain prior to employment.

Education

  • A degree in Education, Special Educational Needs, Psychology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Additional certifications in SEN teaching, behaviour management, or related areas are advantageous.

Experience

  • Proven experience working with children or young people who have special educational needs.
  • Experience in delivering one-to-one or small group tuition tailored to individual learning requirements.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of SEN conditions, such as autism spectrum disorders, dyslexia, ADHD, and speech or communication difficulties.
  • Experience in liaising with families and educational professionals to support learner progress.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong understanding of Special Educational Needs frameworks and legislation within England.
  • Ability to create and implement effective teaching strategies that accommodate diverse needs.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage learners and collaborate with stakeholders.
  • Patience, empathy, and adaptability when working with learners who may present challenging behaviours or require additional support.
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to maintain accurate records and manage time effectively.
  • Competence in using educational technology and resources to enhance learning experiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Qualification in Behaviour Management or Positive Behaviour Support.
  • Training or certification in speech and language support or occupational therapy techniques.
  • Experience working within multi-disciplinary teams or educational settings specialising in SEN.

Working Conditions

  • This role is temporary and part-time, with hours to be agreed based on organisational need and availability.
  • Work is primarily based within educational settings in Greater London but may occasionally require travel to learners’ homes or other venues.
  • Flexibility is essential to accommodate the individual timetables of learners and educational institutions.
  • The role requires regular interaction with children and young people who have diverse and complex needs, requiring resilience and a calm approach.
  • Compliance with safeguarding policies and health and safety regulations is mandatory.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
