Special Educational Needs Tutor
Salary: £25 - £35 per hour
Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor delivers tailored educational support to learners with diverse needs, enabling them to achieve their full potential. This role involves assessing individual learning requirements, planning and delivering personalised lessons, and monitoring progress in accordance with current educational standards and best practises. The tutor works closely with learners to develop their skills, confidence, and independence, ensuring an inclusive learning environment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assess the educational needs of learners with special educational needs and disabilities, identifying barriers to learning and setting achievable targets.
- Design and deliver personalised tuition plans that address specific learning requirements and promote educational development.
- Utilise a range of teaching strategies and resources to engage learners and accommodate different learning styles.
- Monitor and record learner progress, adjusting teaching methods and materials as necessary to support continuous improvement.
- Provide constructive feedback and encouragement to learners to foster motivation and self-confidence.
- Maintain accurate records of sessions, attendance, and learner achievements in compliance with safeguarding and data protection policies.
- Collaborate with parents, carers, and other professionals involved in the learner’s education as appropriate, ensuring a consistent and supportive approach.
- Stay informed about current legislation, guidance, and best practises relating to special educational needs and inclusive education.
- Adhere to all safeguarding and health and safety procedures relevant to the educational environment.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised teaching qualification, such as a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) or equivalent.
- Evidence of specialised training in special educational needs and disabilities.
- Basic safeguarding training or willingness to undertake such training prior to commencing work.
Education
- A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in Education, Special Educational Needs, or a related subject.
- Further qualifications in special educational needs provision are highly desirable.
Experience
- Previous experience working directly with learners who have special educational needs or disabilities in a tutoring, teaching, or support capacity.
- Demonstrable experience of developing and delivering individualised learning programmes.
- Experience of maintaining comprehensive records and reporting on learner progress.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of the principles of special educational needs and inclusive education.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build positive relationships with learners and stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to suit individual learning needs and abilities.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively within a part-time role.
- Competence in using educational technology and resources to enhance learning.
- Knowledge of safeguarding policies and procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Additional qualifications in special educational needs coordination or related fields.
- First aid qualification or willingness to obtain one.
- Experience working within mainstream or special educational settings.
- Familiarity with relevant assessment frameworks and educational plans such as Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).
Working Conditions
- The role is temporary and part-time, with flexible hours to be agreed upon.
- Work may take place in educational settings such as schools, learning centres, or community venues within Greater London.
- The tutor may be required to travel locally between different sites.
- The role requires adherence to safeguarding policies and maintaining a safe learning environment at all times.
- Some duties may involve working with learners who have complex needs, requiring patience, empathy, and resilience.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
