Job Description
The Special Educational Needs Tutor provides tailored educational support to learners with diverse learning difficulties and disabilities. The role involves planning and delivering personalised teaching sessions, assessing individual learning needs, and implementing strategies to enhance educational outcomes. The tutor works closely with learners to build confidence, develop skills, and promote independence within an inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver individualised learning programmes to meet the specific needs of each learner.
- Assess learners’ abilities and progress regularly, adapting teaching methods and materials accordingly.
- Utilise a variety of teaching techniques to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
- Support learners in developing communication, literacy, numeracy, and social skills.
- Maintain detailed records of learner progress and prepare reports as required.
- Collaborate with educational professionals, parents, and carers to ensure a cohesive approach to learner development.
- Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages learner engagement and motivation.
- Stay informed of current best practises and legislative requirements relating to special educational needs.
- Manage behavioural challenges with patience and appropriate strategies.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure the welfare of all learners.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification or recognised Special Educational Needs certification.
- Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check clearance.
Education
- A degree or diploma in education, special educational needs, or a related field is desirable.
- Ongoing professional development in SEN teaching methods is advantageous.
Experience
- Proven experience working with learners who have special educational needs in an educational setting.
- Experience in creating and implementing individual learning plans.
- Familiarity with relevant educational frameworks and legislation.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of a wide range of special educational needs and disabilities.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills to engage with learners and stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt teaching techniques to suit individual learner requirements.
- Patience, empathy and a supportive approach to learner development.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Competence in using educational technology and resources.
- Awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and child protection procedures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualification in behaviour management or therapeutic interventions.
- Experience with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, autism spectrum conditions, or speech and language impairments.
- Training in first aid or mental health awareness.
Working Conditions
- The role is part-time and temporary, with flexible working hours to accommodate learners’ needs.
- Work takes place primarily within educational settings in the Haringey area.
- The post may involve working one-to-one or in small groups.
- Occasional travel within the local area may be required.
- The tutor must comply with health and safety regulations and safeguarding policies at all times.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
