1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant

Full Time | Trafford | Secondary SEN School | Teaching Personnel

Teaching Personnel are seeking a caring, patient, and dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a Year 8 pupil in a specialist SEN secondary school in the Trafford area. The pupil has a range of needs including Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), speech and language communication challenges, and sensory processing difficulties. This is a rewarding full‑time position offering the opportunity to make a meaningful and lasting impact on a young person’s educational journey.


The Role

As a 1:1 SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide tailored, individualised support throughout the school day.
  • Assist with communication development, using strategies such as visual supports, modelling, and simplified language.
  • Support sensory regulation by recognising triggers and using agreed strategies (e.g., sensory breaks, calming activities).
  • Help the pupil access lessons, stay on task, and build confidence across the curriculum.
  • Implement personalised learning plans and contribute to EHCP targets.
  • Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and wider support team.
  • Encourage positive social interactions and help promote independence.
  • Contribute to a calm, safe, and structured learning environment.

✔️ Requirements

We are looking for someone who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people (school-based or otherwise).
  • Understands or is keen to learn about ASC, communication needs, and sensory processing differences.
  • Is patient, consistent, and able to build strong, trusting relationships.
  • Can use clear communication, a calm approach, and positive behaviour strategies.
  • Is reliable, proactive, and willing to work as part of a supportive team.
  • Holds an Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or is willing to apply).

Desirable but not essential:

  • Previous SEN or 1:1 support experience.
  • Knowledge of PECS, Makaton, or sensory regulation techniques.
