Teaching Personnel is currently recruiting for an SEMH Classroom Mentor to join a specialist secondary provision in the Salford area supporting students aged 11-16 with a range of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs including challenging behaviour, Autism Spectrum Condition, Depression, Anxiety and Trauma related behaviours.
This nurturing and supportive setting provides education for students who may have found mainstream school challenging due to behavioural, emotional, or mental health difficulties. The school adopts a therapeutic and relationship-focused approach, helping pupils develop confidence, resilience, and the skills needed to succeed both academically and personally.
The Role
As an SEMH Classroom Mentor, you will work closely with teaching and pastoral staff to create a positive learning environment where students feel safe, supported, and motivated to engage with their education.
Key Responsibilities

- Build strong, positive relationships with pupils to encourage engagement and attendance.
- Support students in managing behaviour, emotions, and social interactions.
- Assist teachers in delivering lessons and adapting activities to meet individual needs.
- Implement behaviour management strategies and support plans.
- Promote positive wellbeing, resilience, and self-confidence.
- De-escalate challenging situations using a calm and proactive approach.
- Support pupils during transitions, breaktimes, and enrichment activities.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals.
- Monitor progress and contribute to student reviews and reports where appropriate.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with young people with SEMH, SEN, behavioural needs, or vulnerable backgrounds is desirable.
- Candidates with backgrounds in youth work, support work, coaching, care, psychology, mentoring, or education are encouraged to apply.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- A patient, resilient, and empathetic approach.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage challenging situations effectively.
- Genuine passion for improving outcomes for young people.
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Teaching Personnel.
Why Work with Teaching Personnel?
- Competitive weekly pay paid through PAYE.
- Dedicated consultant providing ongoing support throughout your placement.
- Access to free and discounted CPD training, including courses in behaviour management, safeguarding, autism awareness, and SEMH support.
- Opportunities for long-term, temporary-to-permanent, and permanent positions.
- Flexible opportunities within a wide network of schools and specialist provisions.
If you're looking for a rewarding role where no two days are the same and you can make a genuine difference to the lives of young people, we would love to hear from you.
