Teaching Assistant – Pupil Referral Service (PRS / PRU)

Are you resilient, compassionate, and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning? Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated Teaching Assistant to join a supportive and dynamic Pupil Referral Unit in Oldham.

This specialist provision supports pupils who are no longer able to access mainstream education, often due to social, emotional, behavioural or additional learning needs. The school provides a fresh start, a nurturing environment, and tailored pathways to help pupils re-engage with learning and build the skills they need for the future.

About the Role

As a Teaching Assistant in this PRU, you will play a vital role in creating a safe, structured and positive learning environment for pupils aged 5–16. You will support young people who may present with challenging behaviours, communication needs or emotional regulation difficulties, helping them develop confidence, resilience and motivation.

You’ll work closely with teachers, pastoral staff and external professionals to ensure each pupil receives personalised support that meets their academic, social and emotional needs.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with SEMH and SEN needs
  • Building positive, trusting relationships to encourage engagement and progress
  • Supporting emotional regulation and using de‑escalation strategies during challenging situations
  • Adapting resources and activities to meet learning needs and behaviour plans
  • Encouraging independence, self-esteem and positive behaviour
  • Assisting with behaviour management using trauma-informed and restorative approaches
  • Contributing to a safe, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment
  • Working collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral leads and external agencies
  • Keep accurate record keeping

Requirements

Essential:

  • Confident, calm and resilient when supporting pupils with behavioural or emotional needs
  • A genuine passion for helping vulnerable young people succeed
  • Ability to build rapport and maintain consistent boundaries
  • Willingness to support personal development and social skills
  • Full-time availability and a commitment to a long-term role

Desirable:

  • Experience in a PRU, SEMH setting, SEN school, or youth work

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
