Teaching Assistant – Primary SEN Unit

Llanelli
Hours: Term time ( 8:30am -3:30pm)
Start Date: ASAP / by agreement

We are seeking dedicated, resilient, and compassionate Teaching Assistants to join our Primary Special Educational Needs (SEN) Unit in Llanelli. The unit supports pupils across mixed primary age ranges and provides both Welsh-medium and English-medium provision.

Some pupils are awaiting placement in specialist education settings and require consistent, skilled support during this transition period.

This role is ideal for individuals with backgrounds in childcare, care, psychology, sports coaching, youth work, or education, who are confident supporting children with complex and varied needs.

We Are Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has experience (paid or voluntary) working with children or young people
  • Is patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient
  • Can remain calm under pressure
  • Is confident supporting pupils with ASD, ADHD, and SEMH needs
  • Has good communication and teamwork skills
  • Is willing to follow individual behaviour, care, and support plans

Welsh language skills are desirable but not essential. Applicants willing to support Welsh-medium learners are strongly encouraged to apply.

About the Unit

The unit supports pupils with a combination of Special Educational Needs, including:

  • ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
  • ADHD
  • Non-verbal communication needs
  • Dyslexia
  • Dyscalculia
  • PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties)
  • SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs)

Pupils are of mixed primary ages and may present with challenging behaviour, sensory needs, and emotional dysregulation.

The Role Will Involve:

  • Supporting pupils 1:1 and in small groups
  • Working with children across mixed primary age ranges
  • Supporting pupils with complex needs, including those awaiting specialist placements
  • Supporting non-verbal pupils and alternative communication methods (e.g. visual supports, AAC)
  • Supporting pupils during meltdowns and periods of emotional dysregulation
  • Using de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour support
  • Managing and responding to challenging behaviour calmly and consistently
  • Working closely with teachers, ALNCOs, and external professionals

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
