Job description

PMLD Teaching Assistant

We are currently seeking a dedicated, compassionate, and resilient PMLD Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school based in PR5. This role is offered on an agency basis, with a clear opportunity to become permanent for the right candidate.This is a highly rewarding role supporting children and young people with profound and multiple learning difficulties, alongside complex physical, sensory, and medical needs. Pupils may be non-verbal, wheelchair users, or require specialist equipment and individualised support throughout the school day. Working closely with class teachers, therapists, nurses, and wider support staff, you will help deliver high-quality, person-centred care and education, ensuring each pupil can access learning, therapies, and daily routines in a safe, meaningful, and engaging way.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Providing tailored 1:1 and small-group support in line with pupils’ Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).

  • Supporting communication strategies, including sensory-based learning, visual aids, and assistive technology.

  • Assisting with personal care, feeding, and toileting, while maintaining dignity and respect at all times.

  • Supporting mobility, moving and handling, and the safe use of specialist equipment where required.

  • Working alongside therapists to support physical, sensory, and therapeutic programmes.

  • Helping to create a calm, structured, and nurturing learning environment that promotes safety and emotional wellbeing.

  • Encouraging independence, engagement, and social interaction at each pupil’s individual level.

  • Following safeguarding, health, and safety procedures at all times.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with PMLD, complex needs, or severe learning difficulties, though this is not essential. You will demonstrate a patient, empathetic, and flexible approach and be confident supporting pupils with personal care and physical needs, or willing to undertake training. A strong understanding of inclusive, trauma-informed, and person-centred practice is essential, along with the ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Experience with moving and handling, medical needs, or SEN-specific training is desirable but not required. 

This is an agency position with a clear temp-to-perm pathway, offering the opportunity to build long-term, meaningful relationships within a supportive and specialist school environment.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
