Job description

Maths Teacher (Permanent)

We are seeking to appoint a passionate, resilient and skilled Maths Teacher to join a specialist secondary provision for pupils aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This is a permanent, full-time position starting in September.

About the Role

This is a unique opportunity to teach mathematics in a setting where relationships, consistency and understanding individual needs are just as important as subject knowledge. You will deliver engaging and accessible maths lessons to small classes, adapting your teaching to meet a wide range of abilities and learning needs.

Class sizes are typically small, allowing you to build strong relationships with pupils and provide personalised support to help them achieve success, both academically and personally.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and delivering creative, differentiated maths lessons

  • Assessing, tracking and supporting pupil progress

  • Adapting teaching strategies to meet a range of SEMH and additional learning needs

  • Managing behaviour positively, using consistent and restorative approaches

  • Creating a safe, structured and engaging classroom environment

  • Working collaboratively with support staff to maximise pupil outcomes

  • Contributing to wider school life, including pastoral support and enrichment activities

About the Pupils

The school supports pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, which can impact their ability to access education in a mainstream setting. Pupils may present with:

  • Difficulties regulating emotions, including anger, anxiety or frustration

  • Low confidence and gaps in learning due to disrupted education

  • Challenging behaviour, such as verbal outbursts, refusal to engage, or disengagement from learning

  • Barriers to forming positive relationships with peers and adults

Success in this role requires a calm, patient and consistent approach, alongside the ability to build trust and motivate pupils who may have previously had negative experiences of education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver high-quality maths teaching across KS3 and KS4

  • Differentiate lessons to meet diverse needs and abilities

  • Support pupils to re-engage with learning and develop confidence in maths

  • Implement effective behaviour management strategies

  • Monitor and report on pupil progress

  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to support pupil development

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent

  • Experience teaching maths at secondary level (KS3/KS4)

  • A strong understanding of differentiation and inclusive teaching practices

  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour in a calm and consistent manner

  • A commitment to supporting pupils with SEMH needs (experience in this area is highly desirable but not essential)

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills

  • A resilient, reflective and adaptable approach

Safeguarding Requirements

All applicants must hold a Child Workforce DBS on the Update Service, or be willing to apply for one prior to employment.

Why Join This Role?

  • Small class sizes and the ability to make a real impact

  • A supportive and collaborative staff team

  • Opportunities for professional development within a specialist setting

  • A rewarding role where you can help transform young people’s attitudes towards learning
