Learning Support Assistant – Primary SEN

Hours: Monday–Friday, 8:30am–3:30pm
Location: Plymouth (multi-site support)
Driving: Full UK driving licence required

Role Overview

We are recruiting a caring, committed Primary SEN Learning Support Assistant to support pupils with a range of special educational needs across specialist and mainstream primary settings in Plymouth. The role involves working closely with children who may present communication needs, developmental delays, sensory needs, or social–emotional challenges. You will play a key role in helping pupils access learning, feel safe, and make positive progress.

Key Responsibilities

– Provide one-to-one or small-group support tailored to primary-aged pupils with SEN
– Support children with communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, and behaviour needs
– Work alongside class teachers to adapt activities, resources, and routines
– Help create a calm, structured, and nurturing learning environment
– Support with daily routines including transitions, social skills, and play-based learning
– Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils and their families
– Travel between settings when required to support different provisions

Essential Requirements

– Must drive and have access to a vehicle
– Experience working with primary-aged children (school, nursery, care, or similar)
– Understanding of SEN such as ASD, speech & language needs, SEMH, or global delay
– Calm, patient, and nurturing approach
– Confident in following behaviour support plans and safeguarding procedures
– Strong communication and teamwork skills

Desirable Qualities

– Experience within specialist SEN or alternative provision
– Knowledge of visual timetables, PECs, sensory strategies or play-based learning
– Training such as Team Teach, Makaton, or trauma-informed practice

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
