Job description

Learning Support Assistant

Full Time

Portsmouth

September 2025

Are you passionate about supporting young people with additional needs? Do you want to work in a forward-thinking and inclusive school where every child is given the opportunity to thrive? A vibrant and community-focused secondary school in Portsmouth is looking for a committed and enthusiastic Learning Support Assistant to join their Inclusion Team from September 2025.

This is more than just a classroom support role – it's an opportunity to become a key part of a team that transforms lives.

Located in the heart of Portsmouth, this oversubscribed and rapidly improving secondary school is known for its inclusive ethos, high expectations, and strong community values. The school is part of a supportive academy trust and places a strong emphasis on restorative practice, pupil voice, and a culture of kindness and respect.

With a reputation for innovation and a commitment to inclusive education, the school supports pupils of all abilities and backgrounds to achieve their full potential – academically, socially, and emotionally. The Inclusion Department plays a crucial role in this vision.

As a Learning Support Assistant in the school’s Inclusion Team, you will not only support pupils in lessons but also contribute to wider strategies that remove barriers to learning and promote personal growth. This is a role for someone who is creative, proactive and genuinely passionate about helping every student feel seen, supported, and successful.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work 1:1 and with small groups to unpick learning barriers, whether academic, emotional or behavioural.

  • Support pupils across a wide range of subjects and ability levels in class and during intervention sessions.

  • Champion the pupil voice by helping students express their needs, reflect on their experiences and set personal goals.

  • Assist with the planning and delivery of creative intervention strategies (e.g. learning through art, sport, or storytelling).

  • Use technology and assistive tools to enable access to the curriculum for learners with specific needs.

  • Facilitate social skills groups, mentoring sessions, and break/lunch time activities to build confidence and connection.

  • Collaborate with teachers to adapt resources and approaches to meet different learning styles.

  • Help maintain a calm, respectful and supportive learning environment that supports emotional regulation.

  • Contribute to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews by providing insightful progress updates.

  • Accompany students on educational visits, enrichment activities, or community outreach projects as required.

We are seeking someone who:

  • Has a genuine interest in inclusive education and helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

  • Brings energy, positivity and creativity to every challenge.

  • Can adapt and respond with flexibility, empathy and patience in a fast-paced environment.

  • Has good communication and interpersonal skills, and can build strong, professional relationships with students, staff and parents.

  • Can stay calm and resourceful under pressure and use initiative to problem-solve in the moment.

  • Has a solid standard of literacy and numeracy, ideally with GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications in English and Maths.

  • Previous experience supporting young people with additional needs is desirable, but attitude, values and potential are more important than formal experience.

If you are interested in the above role and feel you could be the ideal candidate, apply now and submit your CV!
