KS1 General Support Assistant (SEMH Focus) – September Start
We are seeking a committed, resilient, and compassionate General Support Assistant to join our Key Stage 1 team from September. This role involves working closely with children who have very high levels of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, providing tailored support to help them access learning and thrive within the school environment.
About the Role
You will work alongside class teachers and the wider pastoral team to support pupils with complex SEMH needs. The role requires a calm, consistent, and nurturing approach, helping children to regulate their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop confidence in their learning.
This is a highly rewarding role, ideal for someone who is passionate about inclusion and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children who require additional support.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with high SEMH needs
- Support children in managing behaviour and emotional regulation using agreed strategies
- Help pupils engage with learning activities and adapt tasks where necessary
- Build strong, trusting relationships to support children’s wellbeing and development
- Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and external professionals
- Contribute to the implementation of individual support plans and behaviour strategies
- Promote a safe, structured, and positive learning environment
We Are Looking For Someone Who:
- Has experience working with children with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
- Is patient, resilient, and able to remain calm under pressure
- Has a consistent and nurturing approach to behaviour support
- Demonstrates strong communication and teamwork skills
- Is committed to inclusion and supporting every child to succeed
Desirable Experience / Qualifications
- Relevant Level 2 or Level 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (not a necessity)
- Experience in trauma-informed practice
- Knowledge of behaviour support strategies (e.g. de-escalation techniques, restorative approaches)
- Experience working with external agencies or within specialist settings
