HLTA for students with English as an Additional Language
Responsible to Inclusion Manager / SENCo
Job purpose: To provide a holistic oversight and raise educational standards and to ensure that the educational and wider needs of students with English as an Additional Language within the school are met within the mainstream.
Location: Morden
Job Role
- Being the first point of contact for new arrivals for assessment of their level of English and Maths.
- Teaching a Survival English Group for new arrivals when needed.
- Teaching basic language skills to individuals and/or small groups of new arrivals to support their learning in mainstream classes.
- To share knowledge about students’ abilities and needs in English and to encourage teaching staff to use this knowledge effectively in planning, teaching and student grouping.
- Providing in-class support across subject areas where required.
- Supporting mainstream teachers across the curriculum in delivering lessons that enhance the cognitive academic language proficiency of advanced EAL students and provide a strong focus on language acquisition where necessary.
- Providing EAL support to mainstream colleagues teaching EAL students to ensure they are engaging with the subject content and making good progress.
- Liaising with the Heads of Department and other senior managers to ensure that the needs of EAL students are being met within the curriculum.
- Being available in the EAL department to provide drop-in support for students needing help with academic work and/or other concerns.
- Deliver training within HHA and across the trust to Teaching Assistants when required. This may require travelling a short distance to other schools in the Trust when required.
- Deliver training with support from Inclusion Manager to individual teachers, departments and whole school when necessary
- Be aware of developments in EAL practice
- Create a directory of resources, activities, organizations and support services which can be drawn upon by staff/parents to support children identified.
- Attend and participate in multi-disciplinary meetings contributing to the sharing of information and/or planning in relation to specific pupils.
- Undertake a range of administrative duties relevant to the post.
- Participate as required in relevant training.
- Any other duties relevant to the work of the post holder as requested by the Senior Leadership Team.

Higher Level Teaching Assistant: EAL
Essential
Qualifications
· Recognised Bachelor’s degree
· Good pass in GCSE Maths and English
Desirable
· Qualification in EAL
· Qualification relating to the role of HLTA
Knowledge and Experience
Essesntial
· Experience in teaching new arrivals with EAL in a primary context
· Experience of planning, resourcing and teaching intervention groups for students with EAL
· Experience of supporting students with EAL in mainstream classrooms
· Knowledge of the barriers that can prevent students from making expected progress
Desirable
· Spoken fluency in a community language
· Knowledge of the various needs that students with EAL experience in mainstream school
· Knowledge and experience of teaching students with EAL combined with other complex needs such as illiteracy, SEN, challenging behaviour or more able
· Experience of supporting teachers in mainstream classrooms
· Experience of delivering parts of a lesson in mainstream classrooms
· Experience in providing training to colleagues
