Head of English – Secondary School – Dorset

Full-Time | Permanent | Start Date: ASAP

A successful and forward‑thinking secondary school in Dorset is looking to appoint an enthusiastic, driven and inspirational Head of English to lead their thriving department. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced English Teacher or an ambitious middle leader ready to take the next step in their career.


About the Role

As the Head of English, you will:

  • Lead and manage the English department across KS3–KS4
  • Drive high‑quality teaching and learning to boost engagement and attainment
  • Support, coach and mentor colleagues to deliver outstanding English lessons
  • Track pupil progress, analyse data and implement effective interventions
  • Oversee curriculum planning and ensure consistently high standards
  • Build strong relationships with students, staff, parents and external partners

Who We’re Looking For

This position is ideal for:

  • An experienced English Teacher looking for their first leadership role
  • A current middle leader (e.g. 2i/c English, KS3/KS4 Coordinator) seeking progression
  • A passionate educator committed to raising standards and improving outcomes
  • Someone with strong communication, organisational and leadership skills

Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Strong subject knowledge in English
  • A proven track record of improving pupil outcomes
  • Leadership experience (formal or informal) is desirable

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
