Job description

Salaried Teacher Training Programme – Wincanton

Are you passionate about making a difference in education? Do you want to gain hands-on teaching experience while working towards your formal teaching qualification? If so, we have an incredible opportunity for you!

We are excited to offer a Salaried Teacher Training Programme based in Wincanton, designed to give you the practical experience and qualifications needed to become a qualified teacher, all while earning a salary.

Programme Overview:

This two-year programme is ideal for aspiring teachers who want to gain real classroom experience before embarking on their teaching qualification. You will spend your first year working as a Cover Supervisor at a local Wincanton school, gaining essential classroom management skills and building your confidence in a teaching environment.

During the second year, you will progress to completing a fully funded PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education) at the same school, meaning you’ll stay in one familiar and supportive environment throughout your training.

What You Will Gain:

  • Salary: £20,000 - £24,000 per annum
  • A full-time, salaried position from day one as a Cover Supervisor
  • Practical experience of managing classrooms and supporting students' learning
  • Ongoing training and development, tailored to help you grow as an educator
  • Mentorship from experienced teachers and education professionals
  • A fully funded PGCE programme in the second year of training
  • Continuous professional development and guidance on becoming a qualified teacher
  • A guaranteed place in a school for two years, providing continuity and a supportive environment for your training

What You Will Do:

Year 1: Cover Supervisor

As a Cover Supervisor, your primary role will be to manage classrooms during teacher absences. This will provide you with valuable experience in lesson delivery and classroom management, all while engaging with students and supporting their academic progress.

  • Lead classes in the absence of the regular teacher
  • Ensure students remain focused and on task with their learning
  • Help with lesson planning, preparation, and delivery where needed
  • Assist with the general running of the school, including helping students with their queries and offering pastoral support
  • Work closely with other staff to ensure effective learning in the classroom
  • Develop your knowledge of the curriculum and subject-specific teaching methods

Year 2: PGCE Trainee Teacher

In your second year, you’ll transition to the role of a PGCE Trainee Teacher, where you will begin your formal teacher training with full support from the school and local teacher training provider.

  • Complete your PGCE qualification while continuing to gain practical classroom experience
  • Plan and deliver lessons, assess student progress, and provide feedback
  • Take full responsibility for classes as you develop your teaching practice
  • Work towards gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)

Key Benefits:

  • Earn while you learn: A salary between £20,000 - £24,000, with all training costs covered
  • Stay at one school for the full two-year period, ensuring consistency and support as you progress
  • Real teaching experience in your first year, preparing you for success in the classroom
  • Full financial and academic support during your PGCE year, including guidance from mentors
  • Opportunities for career progression within the school or wider educational network after completing the programme

Who We Are Looking For:

We are seeking enthusiastic individuals who are eager to pursue a career in teaching and have a passion for working with young people. Whether you are a recent graduate or considering a career change, this programme is an excellent pathway into the teaching profession.

Essential Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any subject
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • A passion for education and helping young people succeed
  • The ability to commit to a two-year training programme in a Wincanton school

Location:

The position is based at a Wincanton school, where you will stay for the duration of the two-year programme. This will allow you to build strong relationships within the school community and offer continuity for your professional development.
