Job Description
The role of GCSE Tutor involves delivering high-quality, tailored tuition to students preparing for their General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. The post holder plans, prepares and delivers lessons in accordance with the relevant curriculum and examination board specifications. The tutor assesses students’ progress, identifies learning needs and adapts teaching methods accordingly to support academic achievement. The position requires the creation and provision of engaging educational materials and the maintenance of accurate records of student attendance, progress and feedback.
Job Duties
- Plan and deliver effective lessons in one or more GCSE subjects, ensuring alignment with examination board requirements.
- Assess students’ strengths and areas for development to tailor learning plans appropriately.
- Provide clear explanations and support to enhance students’ understanding and confidence in subject material.
- Prepare students for examinations by practising past papers and developing exam techniques.
- Monitor and record student progress, providing regular feedback to students and, where appropriate, to parents or guardians.
- Create and adapt teaching materials to suit individual learning styles and needs.
- Maintain a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages students’ engagement and motivation.
- Stay informed about changes to GCSE curricula and assessment methods to ensure teaching remains current and effective.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and promote the welfare of students at all times.
- Attend relevant meetings and training sessions as required.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised qualification in the subject(s) to be taught at GCSE level, such as a degree or equivalent.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised teaching qualification is preferred but not essential.
Education
- Minimum of A Level qualifications in the relevant subject area, with strong academic credentials preferred.
- Evidence of ongoing professional development in education or subject-specific pedagogy.
Experience
- Previous experience tutoring or teaching GCSE students in the relevant subject(s).
- Experience of adapting teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs.
- Familiarity with the GCSE assessment criteria and examination formats.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong subject knowledge in the relevant GCSE subject(s).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with students and support their learning effectively.
- Ability to assess student progress and provide constructive feedback.
- Good organisational skills to plan lessons and keep accurate records.
- Competence in using educational technology and digital resources to enhance learning.
- Patience, adaptability and a positive attitude towards student development.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a formal school environment or educational institution.
- Training or certification in safeguarding and child protection.
- Knowledge of additional educational support strategies, such as Special Educational Needs (SEN).
Working Conditions
- Part-time hours with flexibility to accommodate student availability, including potential evening or weekend sessions.
- Work is predominantly carried out in a tutoring centre, educational institution, or remotely through online platforms.
- The role may require preparation and marking outside of direct contact hours.
- Temporary contract with the possibility of extension depending on demand and performance.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
