GCSE Tutor
Job Description
The role of GCSE Tutor involves delivering high-quality tuition to students preparing for their General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations. The post requires planning and delivering tailored lessons that meet the diverse needs of learners, identifying learning gaps, and supporting students to achieve their academic goals. The tutor is responsible for fostering an engaging and supportive learning environment that encourages student confidence and motivation.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and prepare personalised tuition sessions in line with the GCSE curriculum and individual student needs.
- Deliver engaging and clear lessons in subjects relevant to GCSE examinations, ensuring content is accessible and pitched appropriately.
- Assess student progress regularly through formative and summative assessments and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify areas of difficulty and adapt teaching methods to support student understanding and improvement.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson plans, and student progress reporting.
- Support students with examination techniques and revision strategies to improve performance.
- Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that respects diverse backgrounds and learning styles.
- Communicate effectively with students and, where appropriate, with parents or guardians regarding progress and areas for development.
- Stay up to date with relevant GCSE curriculum changes and examination board requirements.
- Adhere to safeguarding policies and ensure the welfare and safety of all students at all times.
Required Qualifications
- Relevant teaching qualification or equivalent experience in delivering GCSE level education.
- Strong subject knowledge in one or more GCSE subjects, such as English, Mathematics, Science, or Humanities.
- Current Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check or willingness to obtain one prior to commencement.
Education
- Minimum of a Level 3 qualification or equivalent in the relevant subject area.
- Further professional qualifications in education or tutoring are advantageous.
Experience
- Proven experience in tutoring or teaching students at GCSE level.
- Experience in assessing student progress and adapting teaching approaches to meet individual needs.
- Previous experience working with young learners in an educational setting is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills
- Comprehensive understanding of the GCSE curriculum and examination requirements.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students to achieve their potential.
- Strong organisational skills including planning, record keeping, and time management.
- Patience, adaptability, and the ability to work with students of varying abilities and backgrounds.
- Competent use of digital tools and resources to support teaching and learning.
Preferred Qualifications
- A recognised teaching qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- Experience in delivering tuition in a one-to-one or small group setting.
- Familiarity with different learning styles and special educational needs.
- Training in safeguarding and child protection.
Working Conditions
- The role is temporary and part-time, with flexible hours to accommodate student availability.
- Work is primarily conducted in a tutoring centre, school premises, or remotely via online platforms.
- Occasional evening or weekend sessions may be required to meet student needs.
- The role requires adherence to health and safety regulations and safeguarding procedures.
- The tutor must maintain professional conduct and confidentiality at all times.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
