Level 2 SEMH Teaching Assistant

Location: Preston, PR4
Contract: Full-Time, Agency temp to perm
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

About the Role

A specialist education setting in Preston is seeking a committed and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join the team on a full-time, permanent basis. The school supports children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs who require a highly structured, supportive, and therapeutic learning environment. The successful candidate will work closely with teachers and the wider multidisciplinary team to help pupils engage in education, develop emotional regulation skills, and build confidence both in and outside the classroom. The ideal candidate will be patient, understanding, and able to build strong, positive relationships with pupils who may present with challenging behaviour. You will be calm under pressure, adaptable, and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.

Key Responsibilities

- Support pupils primary aged on a 1:1 basis and in small groups to access learning.
- Assist in delivering personalised learning programmes tailored to each pupil’s needs.
- Provide consistent support to pupils with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties.
- Use positive behaviour support strategies to encourage engagement and progress.
- Help create a calm, safe, and structured learning environment.
- Support pupils in developing independence, social skills, and emotional resilience.
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and pastoral staff to support pupil development.
- Assist with daily routines and activities across the school day.

Experience and Qualifications

- Experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or additional needs is desirable.
- Experience in education, youth work, residential care, or support roles would be beneficial.
- A Teaching Assistant qualification or relevant childcare qualification is desirable but not essential.
- An enhanced DBS check will be required.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
