Job Description
The English Tutor delivers high-quality, tailored tuition to learners aiming to improve their proficiency in English. The role involves planning and delivering engaging lessons that meet the individual needs of students, supporting their development in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. The tutor utilises a variety of teaching methods and resources to foster a positive learning environment and to help learners achieve their academic or personal language goals.
Job Duties
- Plan and prepare lessons in accordance with the learners’ requirements and learning objectives.
- Assess students’ current level of English proficiency and identify areas for development.
- Deliver one-to-one or small group tuition sessions using appropriate teaching techniques and materials.
- Provide constructive feedback to learners on their progress and areas for improvement.
- Adapt teaching strategies to suit different learning styles and abilities.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, lesson plans, and learner progress.
- Communicate effectively with students to encourage motivation and confidence in the use of English.
- Support students in preparation for examinations, coursework, or other English language assessments where applicable.
- Stay informed about current best practises in English language teaching and relevant curriculum changes.
Required Qualifications
- A recognised qualification in English language teaching, such as a teaching certificate or diploma.
- Demonstrable proficiency in the English language, equivalent to native level or higher.
Education
- A minimum of a Level 3 qualification in English, Education, or a related subject is preferred.
- Further education or professional development in teaching English as a second or foreign language is advantageous.
Experience
- Previous experience tutoring English to learners of varying ages and abilities in a one-to-one or small group setting.
- Experience in preparing students for English language examinations or academic assessments is desirable.
Knowledge and Skills
- Strong understanding of English grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and language structures.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with learners.
- Ability to assess learners’ needs and tailor teaching approaches accordingly.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to manage time effectively.
- Familiarity with a range of teaching resources and digital tools to enhance learning.
- Patience, adaptability, and a supportive approach to learner development.
Preferred Qualifications
- A qualification in teaching English as a foreign or second language (such as CELTA, TESOL, or equivalent).
- Experience working with learners from diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Knowledge of curriculum frameworks and assessment criteria relevant to English language teaching.
Working Conditions
- The role is temporary and part-time, offering flexible working hours.
- Work primarily takes place in educational settings or may include online tutoring sessions.
- The tutor may be required to work evenings or weekends depending on student availability.
- The position involves regular use of computers and digital teaching platforms.
- The role requires the ability to manage workload independently and meet deadlines.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
