Job description

English Teacher (Maternity Cover) – Stockport Secondary School

We are excited to offer a rewarding maternity cover position for a skilled and enthusiastic English teacher at a successful secondary school in Stockport. This fixed-term role, starting September 2025, is ideal for a teacher who thrives in a supportive environment and wants to make a meaningful impact in students’ literacy and communication skills.

You will be responsible for teaching English across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, preparing students for GCSE examinations while fostering a love of reading, writing, and critical thinking.

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver engaging and differentiated English lessons covering literature, language, and creative writing

  • Plan schemes of work that meet the diverse needs of learners, including those with SEND or EAL

  • Use a variety of assessment tools to monitor progress and inform teaching strategies

  • Encourage and develop independent reading and analytical skills through class discussions and activities

  • Collaborate with the English department to support cross-curricular literacy initiatives

  • Participate in departmental meetings, staff training, and school-wide events

  • Support exam preparation and revision sessions, ensuring students are confident and well-prepared

Ideal candidate profile:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with a passion for English language and literature

  • Creativity in lesson planning and the ability to inspire a love of language and literature

  • Good communication skills and a collaborative attitude

  • Flexibility and resilience to adapt to the demands of a maternity cover role

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
