Job description

Director of English – Farnborough
Full Time | Permanent | Start Date: September 2026

A high-performing secondary school in Farnborough is seeking an ambitious and inspirational Director of English to lead its successful English faculty from September 2026. This is a rare opportunity for an experienced English practitioner to take on a significant strategic role within an established and well-regarded school community.

The school has been praised by Ofsted for being a harmonious environment where staff and pupils work together with a shared commitment to success. Inspectors highlighted pupils’ positive attitudes, strong relationships with staff, and their willingness to engage fully in their learning (Ofsted 2021). These foundations support a culture of high expectations, excellent behaviour, and consistent academic achievement.

This role has become available due to the retirement of a long-standing faculty leader and presents an exciting opportunity for a motivated leader to shape the future of a thriving subject area. The school is seeking someone who can offer strategic vision, inspire staff, and continue to drive progress within a faculty known for its collaborative ethos and excellent outcomes.

English remains one of the school’s strongest departments, with students consistently making exceptional progress across both English Language and Literature. The faculty benefits from a dedicated teaching block, modern facilities, and a stable team who work collectively to deliver high-quality teaching and an engaging curriculum.

The school is looking for:
• A dynamic English specialist with strong subject expertise
• Proven leadership capability or readiness to step into a strategic role
• A track record of securing excellent outcomes in Language and Literature
• A leader who sets high standards and inspires others to meet them
• Someone who can drive innovation, contribute to whole-school development, and support continuous improvement
• Resilience, positivity, and the ability to motivate and develop colleagues
• A team-focused approach and the ability to collaborate effectively with middle and senior leaders

What the school offers:
• An exceptional culture built on mutual respect and consistently high behaviour standards
• A supportive and welcoming professional environment
• A strong focus on staff wellbeing across the whole school
• High-quality CPD and opportunities for professional development, including leadership pathways
• The chance to influence whole-school strategy, curriculum design, and staff development
• A stable and thriving English faculty with experienced practitioners
• Access to wellbeing and professional support services
