Job description

A supportive and well-run mainstream secondary school in Salisbury is seeking to appoint a Cover Supervisor to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and enthusiastic individual who is keen to gain hands-on classroom experience and is considering a future career in teaching or education.

The role is ideal for graduates, aspiring teachers, or candidates with experience working with young people who want to develop their classroom presence, behaviour management skills, and understanding of secondary education. As a Cover Supervisor, the successful candidate will oversee classes during teacher absences, ensuring learning continues smoothly through the delivery of pre-planned work.

Working across KS3 and KS4, the Cover Supervisor will be a key part of the school’s daily operations, helping to maintain consistency, structure, and positive behaviour throughout the school day. While the role does not involve lesson planning or formal teaching, it provides valuable insight into classroom practice and school life.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising classes in the absence of teaching staff

  • Ensuring students remain focused and engaged with set work

  • Managing classroom behaviour in line with the school’s policies

  • Creating a calm, respectful, and productive learning environment

  • Completing registers and reporting any concerns to senior staff

  • Providing feedback to teachers on student progress, behaviour, and engagement

  • Acting as a positive role model for students

The school is seeking a Cover Supervisor who:

  • Is confident working with secondary-aged pupils

  • Communicates clearly and professionally

  • Remains calm, adaptable, and organised in a busy school environment

  • Has a genuine interest in education and potential teacher training pathways

  • Works well as part of a wider school team

Previous experience in a school setting or working with young people would be beneficial, though full training and support will be provided for the right candidate.

The school offers a welcoming staff culture, clear behaviour expectations, and an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful classroom experience that will support future career progression within education.
