Job description

Are you an enthusiastic and reliable individual with a strong interest in education, eager to make a positive impact in the classroom? A vibrant secondary school in Harrow is seeking a committed Cover Supervisor to join their supportive team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to gain valuable school-based experience, develop professional skills and support students in achieving their full potential.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will play a key role in maintaining continuity of learning during teacher absences. You will supervise whole classes across a range of subjects at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, ensuring that students remain engaged, focused and on task. While you will not be expected to deliver new content, you will facilitate pre-prepared lessons, encourage positive behaviour, manage classroom routines and provide support where needed. This role offers an excellent pathway for aspiring teachers or education professionals, offering hands-on experience in behaviour management, lesson delivery and student engagement.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent communication skills, confidence in leading groups of young people and a genuine interest in supporting their academic and personal development. You will be adaptable and organised, able to build strong relationships with staff and students alike. Previous experience working with young people in a school, tutoring, mentoring or youth work setting is advantageous, but applications are also welcomed from graduates and individuals eager to begin a career in education. Full training and induction will be provided by the school to ensure you are fully prepared to succeed in the role.

This is a rewarding opportunity to join a thriving secondary school committed to excellence, inclusivity and student success. The school prides itself on fostering a positive environment where students are encouraged to develop confidence, resilience and ambition. As a Cover Supervisor, you will be part of a collaborative staff team who work together to uphold high standards and ensure that every learner has the opportunity to thrive.

Responsibilities include:
• Supervising classes during the absence of the class teacher, ensuring pre-prepared work is completed.
• Managing student behaviour in line with school policies and promoting a positive learning environment.
• Providing support to students in understanding tasks and staying engaged in their learning.
• Liaising with teaching staff and senior leaders to report on student progress and classroom conduct.
• Supporting the wider school community through participation in duties, activities and enrichment programmes.

The ideal candidate will have:
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Confidence to lead groups of students and manage classroom routines.
• A proactive, professional and adaptable approach.
• A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people.
• Previous school-based experience or a strong desire to pursue a career in education.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain valuable classroom experience and make a real difference in the lives of young people. Whether you are a graduate considering a future in teaching, an experienced mentor, or an individual passionate about education, this Cover Supervisor role could be the ideal next step for you.
