Job description

A well-established mainstream secondary school in Bournemouth is seeking to appoint a Cover Supervisor to join their team. This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and motivated individual who is interested in gaining valuable classroom experience and exploring a future career in teaching within a secondary school setting.

This role is particularly well suited to graduates, aspiring teachers, or individuals with previous experience working with young people who are looking to develop their skills in behaviour management, lesson delivery, and classroom leadership. The Cover Supervisor will be responsible for supervising classes during short-term teacher absences, ensuring students remain on task and engaged with pre-set work.

The successful candidate will play a vital role in the day-to-day running of the school, maintaining continuity of learning and supporting positive behaviour across KS3 and KS4. While this is not a teaching role, it offers first-hand experience of managing a classroom and working closely with teaching and pastoral staff.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supervising whole classes during planned and unplanned teacher absences

  • Delivering pre-prepared lesson materials and ensuring students understand the work set

  • Managing classroom behaviour in line with the school’s policies

  • Promoting a focused, safe, and respectful learning environment

  • Taking registers and reporting attendance concerns

  • Providing feedback to teaching staff on student engagement and behaviour

  • Supporting students with basic questions while maintaining appropriate boundaries

The school is looking for a Cover Supervisor who:

  • Is confident managing groups of secondary-aged students

  • Has strong communication and organisational skills

  • Is calm, resilient, and able to think on their feet

  • Has an interest in education or a potential pathway into teacher training

  • Can build positive relationships with students and staff

Previous experience working in a school or with young people is desirable, but not essential for the right candidate with the right attitude and confidence. Full training and ongoing support will be provided by the school.

In return, the school offers a supportive working environment, clear behaviour policies, and the opportunity to gain invaluable classroom experience that will strengthen future applications for teacher training or other education-based roles.

Location: Bournemouth
School type: Mainstream secondary
Contract: Full-time

The role is subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
