Job description

Teaching Personnel are seeking to appoint a confident, proactive, and resilient Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH secondary provision in Failsworth. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment and is passionate about making a genuine difference in the lives of young people.

About the School

This specialist provision supports students aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The school provides a structured, nurturing, and supportive environment, enabling pupils to rebuild confidence, re-engage with education, and achieve both academically and personally.

Staff work collaboratively to ensure consistency, develop strong relationships, and provide the stability pupils need to succeed.

The Role

This is a hands-on, highly active role suited to an individual who is confident using their initiative and responding effectively to challenges as they arise.

You will support pupils both inside and outside of the classroom, helping them to regulate behaviour, engage in learning, and develop positive routines.

No two days are the same, so adaptability, resilience, and a calm, professional approach are essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils
  • Support behaviour management using consistent and positive strategies
  • Build strong, trusting relationships with students
  • Assist in delivering engaging lessons and activities
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation and daily transitions
  • Respond confidently and independently to challenging situations
  • Work collaboratively with teachers and the wider support team
  • Maintain a calm, professional, and consistent approach at all times

Essential Requirements

  • Experience working with children or young people
  • A confident, proactive, and adaptable mindset
  • Ability to work independently and use initiative
  • Strong behaviour management skills
  • Resilience, patience, and composure under pressure
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people

Desirable Skills

  • Experience within SEMH settings, PRUs, or alternative provisions
  • Team Teach training (or willingness to complete training)
  • Understanding of trauma-informed practice
  • Experience working with challenging behaviour
