Teaching Personnel are working in partnership with a specialist SEMH alternative provision in the Wigan area to recruit a dedicated 1:1 Teaching Assistant. This provision supports young people who are unable to access mainstream education due to social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs and behavioural challenges.

This is a full-time position with an immediate start, ideal for someone passionate about supporting vulnerable learners and helping them re-engage with education.


About the Role

As a 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with a specific pupil, providing consistent guidance, emotional support, and behavioural interventions to help them succeed both academically and socially.

You will play a vital role in creating a safe, structured, and supportive environment, enabling the pupil to build trust, confidence, and resilience.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide dedicated 1:1 support tailored to the pupil’s individual needs
  • Build a strong, trusting relationship to support emotional wellbeing
  • Implement behaviour support plans and de-escalation techniques
  • Encourage engagement in lessons and positive learning behaviours
  • Support the development of social skills, routines, and independence
  • Work alongside teachers and pastoral staff to deliver personalised support
  • Monitor, record, and report on progress, behaviour, and wellbeing
  • Promote a calm, safe, and inclusive learning environment

✅ What We’re Looking For

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs, behaviour challenges, or additional needs
  • A resilient, patient, and empathetic approach
  • Strong behaviour management and communication skills
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and adapt to changing situations
  • Passion for supporting vulnerable learners and making a difference
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)

Desirable (Not Essential)

  • Experience within PRUs, alternative provisions, or SEMH schools
  • Team Teach or behaviour/de-escalation training
  • Background in youth work, care, education, or psychology

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
