Autism Support Assistant 

  • Work in a special educational needs school in north west Leeds
  • Support students from age 2-19 with Autism 
  • Work as part of a large and diverse support team

I am currently looking for a caring and empathetic individual to work closely with students with autism (ASC) at a special educational needs school near Wetherby, Leeds. The role will be to start once educational settings re-open.

The school caters for children from ages 2-19 many of whom have autism and face difficulties with communication and social interaction. Some students also have additional learning and physical disabilities which require further support from physiotherapists and occupational therapists on site. The school is based across a large site with almost 400 students. The school is highly equip to support the needs of students with specialist equipment including rebound rooms and sensory learning rooms which you may be required to provide additional support in alongside the qualified therapists and nurses. 

The role will be to provide 1:1 support for a student with moderate ASC who faces difficulties with communication, interaction and everyday life, resulting in high levels of anxiety. You will be required to assist the student in all aspects of learning, following the students educational healthcare plan (EHCP) including sensory learning, structured learning and outdoor practical education. At times you may also be required to facilitate small group activities to help improve social interaction amongst students.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be empathetic, patient and understanding towards students.
  • Be encouraging and have a positive approach to reward and learning.
  • Have a hands on approach to learning and engage with the student on all levels. 
  • Have experience of working with young people in either an educational, residential or youth work capacity.
  • Hold an enhanced DBS certificate on the update service or be willing to apply for one. 
  • Have experience of supporting young people with autism is ideal but non-essential.
