Job description

Join Our Team as a 1-to-1 Support Assistant for a Student with SEN
Location: Bolton (BL2) | Full Time | September Start Available

Are you ready to make a meaningful difference by providing personalised support to a young person with special educational needs?

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate 1-to-1 Support Assistant to work closely with a secondary school student with SEN in a specialist setting in Bolton. This is a unique opportunity to provide tailored support that helps the student thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

About the Role
You will work directly with one student aged 11 to 16 who has moderate to complex needs, which may include autism spectrum conditions (ASC), communication difficulties, sensory processing challenges, or physical disabilities. Your role will be to support their individual learning, communication, behaviour, and daily activities throughout the school day.

Collaborating closely with teachers, therapists, and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will deliver personalised support that meets the student’s specific needs. This may include assisting with communication methods such as PECS or Makaton, supporting emotional regulation and sensory needs, helping with mobility and personal care, and encouraging independence.

This role requires patience, empathy, and flexibility, with a focus on building a trusting relationship and understanding the student’s unique strengths and challenges. You will receive ongoing training and support to develop your skills in behaviour strategies, communication, and sensory approaches.

No formal qualifications? No problem!
We value your passion, attitude, and previous experience working with children or young people with SEN, whether in education, care, health, or volunteer settings.

What You’ll Need to Succeed

  • Experience supporting young people with SEN (professional, personal, or voluntary)

  • A calm, adaptable, and compassionate approach tailored to individual needs

  • A genuine interest in SEN education and a willingness to learn new strategies

  • Bonus: knowledge of PECS, Makaton, sensory integration, or behaviour support (not essential)

What You’ll Get in Return

  • A welcoming and inclusive school environment that values staff wellbeing

  • Comprehensive, ongoing training in SEN-specific communication and behaviour support

  • Dedicated guidance from an experienced consultant familiar with the school and student needs

  • Opportunities for personal and professional growth in the SEN education sector

  • The chance to make a real, lasting impact on a young person’s life every day
