Job description

Trainee Teaching Assistant – January 2026 Start

Are you passionate about supporting young people and considering a long-term career in education? We are recruiting motivated and enthusiastic individuals to join inclusive primary and secondary schools across Wigan and Warrington as Trainee Teaching Assistants. ASAP start dates available as well as ongoing roles available. 

This role is an excellent entry point into education and a proven pathway to securing a permanent role in schools. It is particularly well suited to graduates, career changers, or those aspiring to move into teaching, SEND support, pastoral roles, or educational psychology.

The Role:

As a Trainee Teaching Assistant, you will gain hands-on classroom experience while being supported through structured training and development.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Supporting teachers in the delivery of engaging and inclusive lessons
  • Working 1:1 or with small groups of pupils, including those with SEND
  • Assisting with classroom preparation, resources, and displays
  • Promoting positive behaviour and a safe, supportive learning environment
  • Building strong relationships with pupils and school staff
  • Engaging fully in training, mentoring, and professional development

Training & Progression:

This role offers a comprehensive introduction to working in schools, including:

  • Thrive training to support pupils’ emotional and social development
  • Level 2 Teaching Assistant training offered while working
  • Ongoing CPD and regular feedback
  • A strong opportunity to progress into a long-term or permanent school-based role

We are looking for someone who is:

  • Passionate, empathetic, and committed to supporting young people
  • A confident communicator who works well as part of a team
  • Reliable, proactive, and eager to learn
  • Motivated to build a long-term career in education

Desirable (but not essential):

  • Experience working or volunteering with children or young people
  • A clear interest in education, SEND, or pastoral support
  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
