Teaching Assistant – SEMH (Secondary)

Location: Ellesmere Port
Contract: Full-Time | Immediate Start Available

A specialist secondary school in Ellesmere Port is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Teaching Assistant to join its team. The school provides high-quality education and care for students with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, and is committed to creating a nurturing and supportive environment where students can thrive both academically and personally.


Role Overview

The successful candidate will play a vital role in supporting students’ educational and emotional development. Working closely with teaching staff and other professionals, the Teaching Assistant will help foster a positive and inclusive learning environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of tailored lessons and targeted interventions.
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to help students remain engaged and make progress.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and behaviour support strategies.
  • Help maintain a calm and structured classroom environment using effective de-escalation techniques.
  • Monitor and track student progress, providing regular feedback to staff.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, parents, and external professionals to support each student’s holistic development.
  • Participate in relevant training and continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities.

Person Specification

  • Experience working with secondary-aged students, ideally within SEMH, SEN, or alternative provision settings.
  • Patience, resilience, and empathy, with a genuine passion for supporting young people.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with both students and staff.
  • Confidence in managing behaviour and supporting students with complex emotional needs.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Relevant qualifications in education or child development are desirable but not essential.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
