Job description

Student Support Officer

Kettering
Start Date: As soon as possible
£25,800 – £26,006 FTE (Actual salary £22,163 – £22,340)
⏰ 37 hours per week, 39 weeks per year

Teaching Personnel are proud to be working in partnership with one of our partner secondary schools who are looking to recruit enthusiastic and resilient Student Support Officers to join their expanding pastoral team.

This is a role for people who are at their best when it matters most — on their feet, working directly with pupils, not behind a desk.

The belief is simple at this school: students do well if they can. When they struggle, the role of adults in school is to understand what is getting in the way and help remove those barriers. This requires calm, confident professionals who are prepared to step forward rather than step back.

The Role

This is an active, hands-on position where no two days are the same.

You will:

  • Provide in-the-moment support to pupils who are struggling in lessons or around the school

  • Supervise and support pupils within internal alternative provision and reintegration spaces

  • Help pupils successfully reintegrate following absence

  • Build strong, respectful relationships that help pupils feel safe and understood

  • Support behaviour, attendance and wellbeing across the school

  • Work closely with pastoral leaders, teachers and external agencies

  • Contribute to individual support plans and monitor progress

This role requires presence, sound judgement and consistency of approach. It is highly visible and impactful.

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking individuals who are:

  • Calm and confident, particularly in challenging situations

  • Energetic and comfortable working on their feet throughout the day

  • Able to build trust quickly with young people

  • Resilient, emotionally intelligent and solution-focused

  • Clear, fair and consistent

  • Passionate about helping pupils succeed, even when they find school difficult

Experience in schools or youth work is beneficial, but character, mindset and professionalism are what matter most.

This role would suit individuals considering future careers in pastoral leadership, safeguarding, teaching or wider educational support roles.

About the School

The school has recieved a Good Ofsted judgement in July 2023, recognising its sustained focus on high-quality learning experiences and strong pastoral care. The school is committed to ensuring students are not only successful academically but also well prepared for life beyond education.

Staff work collaboratively in a culture built on clarity, respect and high expectations.

About the Trust:

Benefits Include

  • One wellbeing day per year (in addition to annual leave)

  • Local Government Pension Scheme with immediate life cover (3x annual salary)

  • Employee discounts with national and local retailers

  • Freshly prepared breakfast and lunch when working on site

  • Payment of professional subscriptions (where applicable)

  • 24/7 Employee Assistance Programme

  • Health Care cash plan and access to an online GP

  • Car Lease scheme (Tusker)

  • Cycle to Work scheme

  • Ongoing CPD and career development opportunities
