Teaching Personnel are working with a Special School in Leeds who require a Teaching Assistant this September. Situated in the Oakwood area of Leeds, the school benefits from good transport links both from the city centre and from areas such as Harrogate and Wetherby.

The school is a generic special school for pupils aged 2-19, all of whom have an Education, Health and Care Plan (ECHP), and complex Learning Difficulties. 80% of pupils are on the Autistic Spectrum, and many also have complex medical needs, and who because of their communication difficulties become anxious and struggle to engage.

We are seeking an experienced Special Needs Assistant who is familiar with supporting pupils with additional learning needs, ideally within a specialist school setting. You will have an understanding of differentiating learning activities so that pupils with SEN are able to access and engage with these, to make good progress across the curriculum. In addition, you will have experience of delivering personal care, and supporting children during meal and break times that may need assistance with feeding.

As a specialist setting, the school actively seek out best practice and innovative teaching from all over the country, ensuring that pupils can access bespoke learning opportunities and thrive. The school use a variety of teaching approaches such as the TEACCH principles, Intensive Interaction, Sensory Integration, Positive Play, Lego Therapy and The Listening Programme. The school also have a designated Speech and Language Therapy team and Occupational Therapist on site. You will be able to liaise with this multi-disciplinary team to support pupils' social, emotional and physical development, as well as supporting access to learning, under the supervision of the class teacher.
