Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant

Are you looking for a new challenging role in Special Educational Needs? Looking for the next step in your career? Are you dedicated and passionate about helping people reach their full potential?

We are currently recruiting for a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant position in the Northamptonshire area. As a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant you'll be working with young people who need extra support, or require an advanced programme of learning in order to reach their full educational potential. You will be supporting either individuals or small groups of pupils within, or outside the class. A key aspect of working in this field is identifying individual needs and being responsible for creating a safe, stimulating and supportive learning environment.

You may work with a range of ages in a mainstream school or a dedicated special needs school.

Your work will depend on the age of the children and their individual needs, but may include:

  • preparing learning materials under the supervision of the teacher
  • working inside or outside the classroom with individuals or groups
  • adapting support according to needs
  • looking after children's physical, social and emotional welfare
  • creating a stimulating environment
  • giving information and help to teachers
  • keeping records and attending review meetings

No qualifications are necessary, though if you have previous experience or feel confident in at least 3 of the following then don't hesitate to get in touch…

  • Youth/Community work experience
  • Youth Offending Service experience
  • Support/Care Work
  • Special Education Needs Experience (either within a work or a personal environment)
  • Experience in assisting people with social, emotional and mental health issues (either within a work or a personal environment)
  • Sports coaching, qualifications or experience
  • Mentoring/Tutoring
  • Teaching/Learning Support Assistance
  • Challenging behaviour outside of a school environment
  • Outgoing personality
  • Proactive
  • Degree in Psychology or education.

You'll work normal school hours, Monday to Friday during term time. Along with your classroom hours they may also provide training on learning difficulties like dyslexia or autism.

With experience, you may take a course to become a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) or with further study you could become a fully qualified SEN or mainstream teacher.
