SEMH Teaching Assistant – Support Young People to Succeed

Are you passionate about helping children and young people overcome barriers to learning?

We are seeking dedicated, resilient, and compassionate SEMH Teaching Assistants to join specialist schools and alternative provisions across Bristol, Bath, and Weston-super-Mare from September 2026.

This rewarding role involves supporting pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them develop confidence, emotional resilience, and positive engagement with education.

About the Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with students who may experience:

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs
  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
  • ADHD
  • Anxiety and emotional regulation difficulties
  • Challenging behaviour
  • Trauma-related needs
  • Low self-esteem and barriers to learning

You will play a key role in supporting pupils both academically and emotionally, helping them access learning and achieve their full potential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support
  • Build positive, consistent relationships with students
  • Support emotional regulation and behaviour management strategies
  • Encourage participation and engagement in learning
  • Assist teachers with lesson delivery and classroom activities
  • Promote confidence, independence, and social development
  • Work collaboratively with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals

What We're Looking For

  • A patient, calm, and resilient approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • A genuine passion for supporting young people
  • Experience working with children, young people, or vulnerable adults is desirable
  • Backgrounds in youth work, support work, care, coaching, mentoring, psychology, or education are highly valued

Previous SEMH experience is beneficial but not essential, as training and ongoing support will be provided.
