Job description

Teaching Assistant – Full Time (ADHD Support)

Location: Liverpool (PRU Setting)
Contract: Full Time, Potential Temp‑to‑Perm
Start: ASAP / Immediate Start Considered

A pupil referral unit (PRU) in Liverpool is seeking a resilient, empathetic, and committed Teaching Assistant to join its team on a full‑time basis. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is passionate about supporting young people with additional needs—particularly those with ADHD—and who is motivated by the chance to make a genuine impact in a small, nurturing learning environment.

The successful candidate will be joining a setting that works with students whose mainstream placements are at risk. The school is committed to raising aspirations through a trauma‑informed, emotionally friendly approach, removing barriers to learning and supporting young people to thrive both academically and personally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent support to students with ADHD, helping them engage positively with learning.
  • Assist in managing challenging behaviours calmly and effectively, always seeking to understand the need behind the behaviour.
  • Support the implementation of self‑regulation strategies within lessons and structured interventions.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum in small class settings.
  • Contribute to a safe, supportive, and encouraging classroom environment.
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with students to promote emotional wellbeing and academic progress.
  • Participate in reflective practice and follow trauma‑informed approaches embedded throughout the PRU.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Experience or strong interest in supporting students with ADHD or additional behavioural needs.
  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviours with patience, empathy, and consistency.
  • A calm, nurturing approach aligned with trauma‑informed principles.
  • Ability to build rapport with young people who may have faced significant barriers to education.
  • Commitment to helping students develop self‑regulation, resilience, and confidence.

Desirable

  • Previous experience working within a PRU, SEMH provision, or alternative education environment.
  • Experience supporting young people with ADHD or complex behavioural needs in a school setting.

What the PRU Offers

  • Small, focused class groups allowing staff to build meaningful relationships.
  • A supportive, reflective, and emotionally aware staff team.
  • A caring assessment process which seeks to uncover the need behind behaviours and understand each learner as an individual.
  • An opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of young people at a crucial time in their education.
  • The potential for the role to become a temp‑to‑perm placement for the right candidate.
