Lead Learning in a Specialist SEN Environment
Teaching Personnel are seeking an experienced and confident Cover Supervisor to join a specialist secondary school in Oldham from September 2026.
This is an excellent opportunity for an established HLTA, experienced Cover Supervisor, or education professional with substantial classroom leadership experience who is looking to work within a highly supportive specialist setting. The successful candidate will be comfortable leading classes independently, maintaining high expectations, and adapting learning to meet the needs of pupils with a range of complex additional needs.
About the School
This specialist secondary school supports pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and caters for a wide range of additional needs, including:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)
- Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities (CLDD)
- Sensory Processing Difficulties
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs

Staff work collaboratively to ensure every learner receives the personalised support they need to achieve meaningful progress both academically and personally.
The Role
As a Cover Supervisor, you will take responsibility for leading classes in the absence of the class teacher, ensuring pupils remain engaged, supported, and on task throughout the school day.
Working closely with teaching assistants and specialist staff, you will deliver pre-planned lessons, manage behaviour positively, and adapt your approach to meet the diverse learning, communication, sensory, and emotional needs of students across the school.
This role requires a strong classroom presence, excellent relationship-building skills, and the confidence to lead learning independently within a specialist education setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead classes in the absence of the class teacher
- Deliver pre-planned lessons and learning activities
- Maintain a calm, structured, and purposeful learning environment
- Adapt learning activities to support individual pupil needs
- Promote positive behaviour and implement behaviour support strategies
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and social development
- Work effectively alongside teaching assistants and specialist staff
- Monitor pupil engagement and provide feedback to teaching teams
- Follow EHCP strategies and individual support plans where required
- Promote independence, confidence, and positive learning behaviours
- Ensure safeguarding policies and procedures are followed at all times
About You
We're looking for a confident and experienced education professional who is capable of leading classes independently and maintaining a positive learning environment within a specialist setting.
You will ideally have:
- HLTA status, or equivalent experience leading whole classes within a school environment
- Previous experience working with children and young people with additional needs
- Confidence delivering pre-planned lessons and adapting activities to meet individual pupil needs
- Strong behaviour management skills and experience using positive behaviour support strategies
- An understanding of EHCPs and personalised approaches to learning
- Experience supporting pupils with ASC, PMLD, CLDD, sensory processing difficulties, SEMH needs, or other complex learning needs
- The ability to build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and families
- Excellent communication, organisation, and classroom management skills
- A calm, resilient, and proactive approach
- Team Teach training or a willingness to undertake training
