SEMH Teaching Assistant – Full Time

Teaching Personnel are working with a Primary specialist education setting to recruit a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to support children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. This role is ideal for a resilient, compassionate individual who is passionate about supporting pupils who may have experienced trauma, exclusion, or significant barriers to learning.

The provision supports pupils who may present with challenging behaviour, anxiety, emotional regulation difficulties, attachment needs, ADHD, and additional learning needs, offering a structured, nurturing environment where relationships and consistency are key.


The Role:

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in helping pupils re-engage with education and develop positive coping strategies. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Providing 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Supporting pupils to manage behaviour and emotions using trauma-informed and restorative approaches.
  • Assisting with the delivery of tailored learning activities and intervention sessions.
  • Implementing behaviour support plans and contributing to individual support strategies.
  • Supporting pupils during transitions, unstructured times, and off-site or enrichment activities.
  • Building strong, consistent relationships to promote trust, engagement, and self-regulation.
  • Working closely with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals to ensure consistent support.
  • Accurately recording behaviour, progress, and safeguarding concerns in line with policy.

Requirements:

  • Full-time availability is essential (Monday to Friday).
  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, behaviour needs, youth work, care, or education is highly desirable.
  • A calm, patient and resilient approach, with the ability to remain regulated in challenging situations.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to form positive professional relationships.
  • A genuine commitment to safeguarding and supporting vulnerable pupils.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply through Teaching Personnel.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
