Job description

SEMH Teaching Assistant

North Norwich

Support Young People Who Need Someone to Believe in Them

Are you patient, resilient, and looking for a role where you can genuinely make a difference?

We are recruiting a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school north of Norwich that supports children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education. These pupils often face a variety of social, emotional, mental health, and behavioural challenges and need positive, consistent adults to help them overcome barriers to learning.

This is a highly rewarding role where you'll have the opportunity to support students through some of their most challenging moments, helping them build confidence, develop resilience, and achieve success both academically and personally.

While the role can be demanding at times, with some pupils displaying challenging behaviours or requiring significant emotional support, the impact you can have on a young person's future makes it incredibly worthwhile. [SEMH TA do...glas bader | Word]

The Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils with social, emotional, and behavioural needs both in and outside the classroom
  • Help students engage with learning activities and achieve individual goals
  • Build positive, trusting relationships with young people who may have had difficult educational experiences
  • Promote positive behaviour through consistency, patience, and clear boundaries
  • Work closely with teachers and support staff to create a safe, structured learning environment
  • Encourage confidence, independence, and emotional wellbeing

What We're Looking For

We're seeking individuals who:

  • Are resilient, patient, and able to remain calm in challenging situations
  • Have a genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people
  • Can build positive relationships and act as a strong role model
  • Are proactive, reliable, and adaptable
  • Have experience in education, care, youth work, coaching, support work, or similar environments (desirable but not essential)

About the School

The school provides tailored educational pathways for up to 98 pupils from Year 1 to Year 11 who are unable to attend mainstream education. Working closely with families and the wider community, staff deliver highly personalised support programmes designed to help every student thrive and reach their full potential. Watching a student gain confidence, regulate their emotions, re-engage with learning, or achieve a goal they once thought impossible can make this one of the most fulfilling roles in education.

All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role. Please see the FAQ’s on the Teaching Personnel website for details.
All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
