SEMH Pastoral Support Worker – Secondary PRU (Trafford)

Are you passionate about supporting young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs such as anxiety, low self-esteem, attachment difficulties, trauma-related behaviours, emotional dysregulation, or challenges associated with ADHD/ASC? Teaching Personnel is seeking a committed Pastoral Support Worker to join a dynamic Secondary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in Trafford, helping students overcome barriers to learning and thrive both academically and emotionally.


About the Role

As an SEMH Pastoral Support Worker, you will play a crucial role in supporting students who require additional help managing their emotions, behaviour, and social interactions. Working alongside teachers, senior leaders and multi-agency professionals, you will provide consistent, compassionate support to help students re-engage positively with education.


Key Responsibilities

  • Build trusting, supportive relationships with students presenting SEMH needs.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group pastoral or behavioural interventions.
  • Support students in managing emotional regulation, conflict resolution and behaviour de-escalation.
  • Work closely with teaching staff to create a calm, safe learning environment.
  • Contribute to personalised support plans and behaviour strategies.
  • Encourage positive attendance, punctuality and social development.
  • Promote resilience, confidence and positive decision-making.
  • Uphold safeguarding, behaviour and inclusion policies at all times.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, you must have:

  • An Enhanced Child Workforce DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Prior experience working with young people with SEMH, behavioural needs, or challenging circumstances (PRU, youth work, residential support, SEN school, or similar settings).
  • Full-time availability, Monday–Friday during school hours.
  • Strong communication, resilience and behaviour management skills.
  • A calm, empathetic and patient approach to supporting vulnerable learners.
  • A genuine passion for improving outcomes for young people.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
