SEMH 1:1 Teaching Assistant – Wigan

Teaching Personnel

Are you passionate about making a real difference in the lives of young people? Teaching Personnel are seeking a dedicated SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) 1:1 Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary SEMH provision in the Wigan area. The young people you’ll support may present needs such as anxiety, low self-esteem, trauma-related behaviours, attachment difficulties, or challenging behaviour — and your role will be key in helping them re-engage with learning and build positive pathways.

About the Role

As a 1:1 SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Provide tailored support to a designated pupil with SEMH needs, helping them regulate emotions, manage behaviour, and engage in lessons.
  • Build strong, trusting relationships to promote positive behaviour and personal growth.
  • Implement individual behaviour plans and de-escalation strategies consistently.
  • Support classroom learning, adapt activities where necessary, and encourage independent participation.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral staff, and external professionals.
  • Promote a safe, nurturing learning environment that supports emotional resilience.

What We’re Looking For

To be successful in this role, you will need:

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs—for example, in a school, youth work, care, or inclusion setting.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
  • Strong behaviour management and de-escalation skills.
  • Patience, resilience, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
  • A genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers and succeed.
  • The ability to adapt quickly, think creatively, and maintain a positive mindset.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
