Job Title: Behaviour Support Assistant

Location: Gateshead

Job Type: Full-Time

Some students need more than just a teacher — they need someone who understands, supports and believes in them.

We are looking for a Behaviour Support Assistant to work with secondary school students (Key Stages 3 & 4) who may have SEN, SEMH needs, or behavioural challenges. This is a hands-on, fast-paced role where your ability to stay calm, build trust and provide consistent support can have a lasting impact.

You’ll play a vital role in helping students regulate their emotions, re-engage with learning and succeed in school.

Who This Role Would Suit

This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about supporting young people, including:

  • Teaching Assistants / Learning Support Assistants
  • Youth Workers, Mentors or Pastoral Staff
  • Sports Coaches
  • Psychology, Education or Criminology Graduates
  • Support Workers / Social Care Professionals
  • Ex-Military Personnel
  • Anyone with experience working with young people with behaviour or additional needs

Your Responsibilities

  • Providing 1:1 and small group support to students
  • Supporting pupils to manage emotions and behaviour effectively
  • Using calm, consistent de-escalation strategies
  • Building strong, positive relationships based on trust and respect
  • Encouraging engagement in lessons and school activities
  • Working collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff and pastoral teams

What We’re Looking For

  • A calm, consistent and confident approach to behaviour management
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build rapport with teenagers
  • Resilience, patience and emotional intelligence
  • A genuine desire to support and motivate young people
  • A DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
