Job Title: PMLD Teaching Assistant
Location: Wakefield
Reports To: SEN Coordinator/Classroom Teacher
Job Summary:
The PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties) Teaching Assistant supports students with significant learning difficulties, providing specialized educational assistance to help them achieve their full potential. This role involves working closely with teachers, therapists, and other support staff to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:

Support for Students:
- Assist students with PMLD in all aspects of their learning and development, adapting support according to their individual needs.
- Provide personal care and assistance with daily activities, including feeding, toileting, and dressing.
- Use specialized communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS) to facilitate interaction and learning.
- Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and support the assessment of student progress.

Classroom Assistance:
- Support the teacher in planning and delivering lessons tailored to the needs of students with PMLD.
- Prepare and adapt learning materials and resources to ensure accessibility.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Assist with the implementation of behavior management strategies.

Collaboration and Communication:
- Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, and other professionals to deliver holistic support.
- Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers, providing regular updates on student progress and well-being.
- Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.

Health and Safety:
- Follow school policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
- Administer first aid and medication as required, following appropriate training and guidelines.
- Monitor and report any safeguarding concerns in accordance with school policies.
Qualifications:

Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people with PMLD.
- Understanding of various communication methods used with students with PMLD.
- Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with special educational needs.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Desirable:
- Relevant qualifications in special education or a related field.
- Knowledge of current best practices in supporting students with PMLD.
- Training in Makaton, PECS, or other communication systems.
- First aid and safeguarding training.

Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the update service or willing to apply for one.
- Must have a Right to Work in the UK.
- Must have lived in the UK for a minimum of 6 months.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
