Teaching Personnel are working closely with a primary Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) in the Trafford area to appoint a committed and resilient Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) for a full-time position.

This provision supports pupils who are unable to access mainstream education due to Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, challenging behaviour, Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, trauma and attachment difficulties, and additional learning needs. Many pupils require consistent routines, emotional regulation strategies, and strong, trusting relationships to re-engage successfully with education.

The Role

As a HLTA, you will play a key role in supporting pupils’ academic progress, emotional development, and behaviour, working alongside teachers, pastoral teams, and external professionals to deliver targeted support within a structured primary PRU setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver pre-planned lessons and learning activities across the primary curriculum, adapting content to suit individual learning and emotional needs
  • Take responsibility for whole-class supervision during short-term teacher absence, ensuring continuity of learning
  • Lead and deliver 1:1 and small-group interventions focusing on:
    • Literacy and numeracy catch-up
    • Emotional regulation and wellbeing
    • Social communication and life skills
    • Behaviour support and reintegration readiness
  • Support pupils with highly dysregulated behaviour, using trauma-informed approaches, de-escalation strategies, and restorative practices
  • Act as a consistent, positive role model, supporting pupils to build trust, resilience, and self-esteem
  • Accurately monitor, record, and report on pupil progress and behaviour
  • Contribute to a safe, calm, and nurturing learning environment that promotes emotional and behavioural regulation
  • Uphold safeguarding procedures and maintain high standards of care and professionalism

Requirements

  • HLTA qualification (or equivalent Level 4 qualification) – essential
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour, ideally in a PRU, SEMH school, or specialist setting
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice and behaviour management strategies
  • A calm, resilient, and proactive approach
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to obtain one through Teaching Personnel

What Teaching Personnel Can Offer

  • A full-time, long-term role, with the potential to become permanent
  • Competitive weekly pay paid via PAYE
  • Support from a dedicated SEN specialist consultant
