SEMH Behaviour Intervention Support Assistant

Location: Wigan
Salary: Competitive and based on experience
Contract: Full time

Teaching Personnel are working in partnership with a specialist secondary SEMH school in the Wigan area that supports young people aged 11–16 with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Students at this school may experience challenging behaviour, emotional regulation difficulties, anxiety, trauma‑related behaviours, ADHD, attachment needs, and difficulties forming positive relationships.

This role is ideal for someone who is resilient, compassionate, and motivated to make a real difference to the lives of young people who require consistent boundaries, patience, and positive role modelling.


The Role

As a Behaviour Intervention Support Assistant, you will play a key role in helping students manage their behaviour, engage with learning, and develop positive coping strategies within a structured and nurturing environment.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Providing targeted behaviour intervention support on a 1:1 and small‑group basis
  • Supporting students to regulate emotions and manage challenging behaviour
  • Implementing behaviour support plans and restorative approaches
  • Acting as a positive role model and building strong, trusting relationships with students
  • Supporting pupils during lessons, breaks, and transitions throughout the school day
  • Assisting teaching staff in creating calm, structured and engaging learning environments
  • De‑escalating challenging situations using trauma‑informed and positive behaviour strategies
  • Encouraging engagement with learning and promoting positive social interactions
  • Ensuring safeguarding, wellbeing and safety are prioritised at all times

About You

  • Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH or challenging behaviour is highly desirable
  • Calm, patient and resilient when faced with challenging situations
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships
  • Understanding of behaviour management strategies and emotional regulation
  • A genuine passion for supporting vulnerable young people
  • A proactive, flexible and team‑focused approach
