SEMH Teaching Assistant – Primary School

Location: North Manchester
Start Date: Immediate

We are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming small primary school in North Manchester. This role involves supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs, including those who may present with challenging behaviour.

This opportunity is well‑suited to someone who is calm under pressure, resilient, and confident in providing consistent boundaries, emotional support, and positive behaviour interventions.

About the Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils to access learning, regulate emotions, and develop positive relationships throughout the school day. You will be a key part of the support system during moments of dysregulation, helping pupils feel safe, understood, and ready to learn.

Key Duties

  • Providing tailored support for pupils with SEMH needs
  • Managing and responding to challenging behaviour using de‑escalation strategies
  • Supporting emotional regulation and social skill development
  • Building strong, trusting relationships with pupils
  • Working collaboratively with teachers and wider support staff
  • Helping maintain a structured, safe, and nurturing learning environment
  • Delivering 1:1 support where required

Essential Criteria

  • Experience with, or a strong understanding of, SEMH and challenging behaviour
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Confidence in responding to dysregulated behaviour
  • Comfortable providing consistent 1:1 support
  • Strong team‑working skills
  • Available full‑time and committed to a long‑term placement

Desirable Experience

  • Previous work within an SEMH, SEN, or specialist education setting
  • Team Teach training (or willing to undertake training)

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
