Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) – Alternative Provision
Location: Burgess Hill
Contract: Full-time, Monday–Friday
Start Date: ASAP
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
The Role
Teaching Personnel are looking for a confident and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join an alternative provision setting in Burgess Hill.
This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who is passionate about supporting young people who may have SEMH, behavioural and additional educational needs, and who can provide consistency, structure and positive support within a smaller, more specialist setting.
Due to the location of the provision, applicants must be able to drive and have access to their own vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
- Supporting teaching and learning across the provision
- Delivering activities and interventions to individuals and small groups
- Supporting pupils with SEMH, behavioural and additional needs
- Building positive and trusting relationships with young people
- Helping pupils develop confidence, independence and emotional regulation
- Managing challenging behaviour using positive and consistent strategies
- Maintaining clear boundaries and expectations
- Creating a calm, safe and supportive learning environment
- Working closely with teachers and the wider pastoral team
- Acting as a positive role model for pupils
- Taking on additional responsibilities appropriate to an HLTA role
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who is:
- Experienced as an HLTA, Teaching Assistant or in a similar education/support role
- Confident supporting young people with challenging behaviour
- Calm, patient and resilient
- Consistent and confident in setting boundaries
- Compassionate and non-judgemental
- Able to build strong relationships with pupils
- Adaptable and confident working in a less traditional educational environment
- A strong communicator and team player
- A driver with access to their own vehicle
Experience within SEN, SEMH, alternative provision, behavioural support, youth work, residential care, mentoring or similar settings would be highly beneficial.

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
