Job description

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Head of Science to lead and develop an engaging, accessible Science curriculum within a specialist setting for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEN). This is an exciting opportunity for a committed educator to inspire curiosity and foster a love of learning in young people who benefit from tailored, supportive approaches.

Our pupils present with a range of additional needs, including autism spectrum conditions, social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs and complex trauma, and associated communication and learning differences. Many require structured, predictable environments alongside flexible, creative teaching strategies to support engagement, emotional regulation, and academic progress.

Start date: September 2026 or ASAP

The Role
As Head of Science, you will:

  • Lead and manage the Science department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning across all key stages
  • Create opportunities for hands-on, experiential learning that builds confidence, curiosity, and real-world understanding
  • Embed strategies that support communication, engagement, and emotional regulation within Science lessons
  • Support and develop staff in effective SEN teaching practices, including differentiation and the use of visual, practical, and multi-sensory approaches
  • Monitor and celebrate progress in meaningful, individualised ways

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and strong subject knowledge in Science
  • Experience working with pupils with SEN, particularly autism and/or SEMH
  • An understanding of the barriers to learning that can impact engagement in Science
  • A creative, flexible, and nurturing approach to teaching
  • Proven leadership skills and the ability to motivate and support a team
  • A commitment to inclusive education and a belief in every pupil’s potential

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
